OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, announced a significant shift in the company’s AI model release strategy. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Altman revealed that OpenAI plans to release two intermediate models, o3 and o4-mini, in the coming weeks, followed by the much-anticipated GPT-5 in a few months. 
This decision marks a departure from OpenAI’s earlier roadmap, which had initially sidelined the consumer launch of the o3 model. Altman attributed this change to several factors, emphasizing the potential to enhance GPT-5 beyond initial expectations. He acknowledged the complexities involved in integrating various components smoothly and highlighted the necessity of ensuring adequate capacity to meet the anticipated unprecedented demand.   
The o3 model, first unveiled in December 2024, represents a significant advancement in AI reasoning capabilities. Designed to tackle complex problems through step-by-step logical processing, o3 has demonstrated superior performance in tasks requiring advanced coding, mathematics, and scientific reasoning. Its development underscores OpenAI’s commitment to refining AI’s ability to engage in more nuanced and accurate problem-solving.

Despite these advancements, GPT-4.5 was not classified as a frontier model, indicating OpenAI’s ongoing pursuit of more groundbreaking innovations. 
Furthermore, OpenAI has been proactive in addressing the challenges posed by emerging competitors. The release of DeepSeek’s R1 model in January 2025, which rivaled the performance of OpenAI’s o1 at a fraction of the development cost, prompted OpenAI to accelerate its own model releases and enhance their capabilities.
